"The movie The Pawnbroker came out in the mid-sixties. Rod Steiger plays a man who looses his family in a concentration camp in situations that, for me, are the worst living nightmares a person could bear. The character survives, somehow makes his way to New York, and perseveres, enduring incessant flashbacks of the horror.

David Friedkin wrote the screenplay. In 1991 his son, playwright Gregory Friedkin, produced and directed The Pawnbroker for the Los Angeles stage. He asked me to compose and record the music.

I remember sitting down to read the script, eleven at night, unfamiliar with the story. My couch is about five feet from my piano. I read through it, walked over, sat down, and played and wept until dawn. I have a family of my own. I vividly remember the wet ivory keys, my hands trembling, putting music to the images of a man being forced to watch helplessly while atrocities are committed on his loved ones. It was as profound a musical experience as I’ve ever had.

I put it on tape and got some of the players from Zero to add their brilliance. The music that came out of it expresses profound sadness, and, at the same time, the courage and uplifting power of survival in our souls... as only music can." Greg Anton, October 2002
